the training program officially starts today--twelve weeks out from the marathon. i'm feeling a little apprehensive because of this crazy foot thing, but i just keep hoping it will work itself out. with that said, i may try to be a little more careful with adding too much mileage in the beginning anyway....
mon (8.24) - group run tonight. i did the 7 mile loop. felt very empty and tired. my legs felt heavy and dead. my foot was really hurting almost the entire run. i'll probably regret not staying closer to the house and trying to run on a softer surface (the 7 mile loop is mostly on a paved bike path).
tues (8.25) - everything was sore today. my foot was especially bad and my muscles were rebelling. i didn't originally intend on taking a day off this week, but if i was going to, today would have to be the day. i did do a lot of heating and icing in hopes of helping things along.
wed (8.26) - today was the first workout of the marathon segment. i had to do my workout in the morning rather than meeting the group that night because i was needed at the store for a long split-shift day (in south city in the morning, then out to west county to close). i got up a half hour early to do some heating and stretching. i also threw some gel heel pads in my shoes and put the compression calf sleeves on for good measure. not sure if any of these things helped, but i figured it was worth trying. when i started off my right foot was still very sore and i had pain in my heel with every step. after about 10 minutes or so i started to loosen up a little i guess as the pain started to subside a little and i was able to not feel like i was compensating as much (my left ITB has taken a beating from this!). i did about a 14 or so minute warm-up and then started into the workout. it was a fartlek with 3:30 hard, 1:30 easy for 35 minutes (or 7 times).
let me say that 3 min and 30 sec felt like an eternity!! but that's pretty common for the first workout i guess. i made it through and on some of them, i felt pretty strong. my major downside was staying focused. this will come back with time i think. this is, afterall, my first hard effort since the macklind mile back on july 4th. i did a nice cool-down back home to give me about 7.5 on the day. --possibly a little further than that, but definitely wasn't a full 8. i got back home with enough time to get in some stretching, foam rolling and a little icing before heading off to day 1 (of three) of my 'marathon' shifts at the store. i'll be happy when the team nights are over!!!
thurs (8.27) - got up this morning to meet kris. this time i woke up, did my normal getting ready routine and headed out the door about 8 mintues early to get a little extra running in before i got to the park. surprisingly, my foot didn't hurt all that bad. in fact, i hardly noticed it. maybe i didn't really walk around much before i left the house this morning so it didn't have time to get mad at me! at any rate, once i got to the park kris wasn't quite there yet, but i was thankful because i got in some dynamic stretching and worked on the calves and hamstrings a bit. then we started around the park and ran into meaghan so she joined us for part of the run! i did three laps this morning plus the extra beforehand an i'm going to call it 6.5 miles for the day.
fri (8.28) - had a good run this morning. starting to feel more like myself. i've got some gel heel cushions in my shoes and that seems to help a little. 6 miles for the day.
sat (8.29) - felt great this morning! the weather was cool as i headed to francis to run several loops on the grass (trying to stay off pavement lately). things are really coming around. 6 on the day.
sun (8.30) - run out at caslewood. ran with julie b., kris and sara. another gorgeous morning to run (probably in the upper 50s, low 60s when we started). actually took a gu during the run today and that really made the second half of the run feel much better than last week. we really rolled on the way back but it felt good. stood in the creek afterwards. 16 on the day.
total weekly mileage: 49 miles
shoes: inspire = 97 miles, trance = 100 miles

thirteen weeks out
alright. one week from when the 'real' work begins and i start officially following a training plan. the goal for this week is to prepare myself for another good long run and get my mileage in the mid-40s.
mon (8.17) - ran at the group run with sara, kris, meaghan and jenny. it was storming and raining so we stuck to the park in case we had to get back quick! we ended up doing 6 miles. i actually felt pretty good considering the long run the day before. this is also day 2 of wearing a new pair of the brooks trance too. i am really liking them and i think right now while i'm trying to build my mileage up i may wear them a little more often than the inspire. they are the high end cushion with the same stability and i think that little extra is helping right now!
tues (8.18) - this morning was probably the first morning run by myself where i've felt decent. i did a loop through the hill (the italian neighborhood). it is, no surprise, a hilly run--but it was nice to get away from the normal loops i always end up doing. 5 for the day.
wed (8.19) - i was really tired today. i think the long weekend of work plus the long run really caught up to me today. i kept it low key this morning and just did an easy 4. i'll make up some more mileage later in the week.
thurs (8.20) - met sara after work for a run today. we ran down to carondelet park, around and back for 6 miles. my right hip flexor area is really tight today. i'm going to have to be careful with that.
fri (8.21) - ran this morning. it was nice and cool. the storms that blew in a day or two ago gave us a nice break in the weather. i just got in an easy 4. my right side is still really tight. i did some foam rolling when i got back and then iced up the foot. i think i'll wear my oxysocks today and see if it will help loosen up my calves.
sat (8.22) - at the last minute i had to head downtown at 6:30am to help at an event and then head straight to the store. i was exhausted and had a bad headache by the time the 'work' day was over so i scrapped running.
sun (8.23) - long run at forest park this morning. i wore some compression calf sleeves this morning. not sure how much it really helped, but i'll take anything i can get. towards the end of the run my foot was starting to hurt again. overall, a pretty nice run though. downtown to the arch and back for 14 miles. i mostly ran with kris, but started off with sara, meaghan and jenny too.
total weekly mileage: 39 miles

fourteen weeks out
fourteen weeks out from the marathon. my goal this week is to get my mileage into the mid to upper 30s (trying not to over do it) and keep up on icing my foot, becoming best friends with the foam roller and stretch a lot!
8.10 (mon) - did the group run tonight--ran with sara. i was a little nervous to head out on the 7 mile loop because there's no easy way to make it shorter if i wasn't feeling good. instead, we stayed in the park and did three loops instead of two. 5.5 miles on the day (we cut a little off with a detour to the bathrooms). my right ITB is still tight and my right foot is still giving me problems so i did some icing.
8.11 (tues) - met kris this morning for our usual run around francis. i didn't feel too bad running but really spent a lot of time on the foam roller afterwards. i could feel the tightness in the calf and ITB a lot after the run. i also iced the foot again. definitely no sandals or non-supportive shoes for me anytime in the near future! 4.5 for the day.
8.12 (wed) - run with kris in the am again. the typical francis loops. starting to feel a little better when i'm running, but this darn foot is still really bugging me. grrr..... 4.5 for the day.
then, it was off to a fun filled day with my husband at six flags! yay for being a kid again! we took advantage of having a middle-of-the-week day off together. we rode all the coasters and i spent the rest of the time talking him OUT of playing one of those cheesy games. what would i do with a giant teddy bear anyway....
8.13 (thurs) - met kris this morning. we did three laps (plus a little extra) today though as we both had a little more time and i was feeling pretty decent. my foot is very sore in the morning, but so far, once i put shoes on it is better. of course after a long day of working it is tender (to be expected). i just keep trying to ice it up, hoping that one morning i'll wake up and it will miraculously feel better!!! i'm calling it 6 for the day.
8.14 (fri) - it was very hard to get up this morning. sometimes the tiredness finally catches up to me in one terrible day. i got up at 7 with every intention of running. i couldn't do it. i went back to bed at 8 and slept until 10! then i decided to just get out the door and get something in. so i went to francis and did two loops but i ran in the grass just to the inside of the sidewalk. it felt nice to be off the pavement a little. luckily it was too terribly hot yet, though i did stop for a quick drink at the fountain once. 4.5 for the day.
8.15 (sat) - took today off. i didn't want my weekly mileage to jump up too high too quickly. i've hopefully learned my lesson there!!
8.16 (sun) - long run out at castlewood. man i love running out there! i did 1hr 43min. i'm going to just call it 12 even though i think we were running 8 min pace almost the entire time. i do have to keep in mind that being on a softer surface, not to mention rocks and uneven terrain will sometimes slow you up a bit. i was glad that i'm starting to come around a little bit. i just keep treating the foot and hope for the best.

the Today Show wedding!!
ben's friends from Hanson's--Nick Cordes and Leigh Daniel--won the Today Show wedding. so two days after being back from louisiana for the macdowell wedding, we flew out to NYC to be guests at their wedding and of course, on the Today Show!!
all the wedding guests got a great deal to stay at the plaza hotel--who could refuse?! this place was so nice you were almost afraid to touch anything. plus, you know it is fancy when people stop outside your hotel and take photos as if they were staying there. we had a butler...and we wore white gloves! there was an electronic keypad that dimmed the lights, set the room temperature and controlled the tv! the bathroom was unbelieveable and the shower you controlled by the actual temperate you wanted the water to be--awesome!!

anyway, on to the wedding....
so we had to arrive outside NBC studios at Rockefeller Center at 6:30am. Yes, A.M.! crazy. so a little groggy, but all dressed up, there we were. we 'practiced' walking in once, then had to do it again, only on camera. in the meantime, i got to see a quick glimpse of David Beckam (but was only able to capture the back of his head). he was a guest on the Today Show that day. we also got to see all the 'celebrities' of the today show--pretty cool. the actual ceremony for nick & leigh was VERY quick. what you saw on tv was all we saw too! after it was done, we were off to the grand ballroom at the plaza hotel. it is something to behold! first, we received a video (Flip) recorder as our 'party favor'. ummm, yeah, we didn't even give out a party favor, let alone a $100+ HD video recorder (that is awesome by the way). but then again, we didn't have NBC footing the bill.... so the reception was unbelievable. yes, it was only about 9am at this point, but we ate (steak & fish), drank (a lot, but my favorite was the pink champagne!) and danced the mid-morning away!! ben danced with natalie morales and yes, he is still bragging about it.

the reception ended about 1pm, then we retreated to our rooms for a power nap and then met back up with friends and ate at a great pizza joint and then enjoyed a few more beers in little italy before calling it an early night.

quite the whirlwind trip, but it was worth it!!!
congrats Nick & Leigh!

the tour of the deep south--long overdue!
yes, my recount of our trip to louisiana for adam & sara's wedding is long overdue!
i apologize in advance because like an idiot, i forgot to bring along my camera! i will track down some photos and post some soon (hopefully).
we headed into new orleans first, on thursday (july 16). we toured the french quarter with the company of matt & katie helbig and tim bradley. tim was sporting some brand new khaki shorts! (long story, but tim ONLY wears khaki pants of some sort). anyway, later ben and i met up with uncle phil and aunt linda for some beers and then dinner. then we headed back to the french quarter for a debacherous evening on bourbon street. we ran into justa & scott and some others in town for the macdowell wedding as well. lots of booze and boobs later, i sober drove us back to my family's place.
the next day we headed to baton rouge for all of the wedding festivities. the rehearsal dinner was at a plantation home just outside the city. it was a lot of fun and the food was (of course) fantastic!! plus i just love the southern hospitality--could sara's family be any nicer?!
saturday was the big day and sara was gorgeous. the reception followed at a local restaurant complete with a live band--who did a great job i might add! my favorite part of the reception: a table with all things pink candies and the world's best cupcake. ever. seriously, it was awesome.
then the happy couple headed out and we did too--but to continue to go out of course. we hit up a local pub for some beers and then into downtown baton rouge where we stumbled upon a fabulous bar that had some great live zydeco music playing and there we danced the night away.
the next day we headed over to the gaudet home (straight from an anthropologie catalog--it was goreous, and yes, i wish it was my home...) for some post-wedding brunch. then off to new orleans to relax at the wilson pool before saying goodbye to louisiana and heading back to the reality of missouri.....

fifteen weeks out
this is the week of rallying...
8.3 (mon) - ran 4.5 with sara and meaghan at the BR group run. it was nice to have company to distract me from feeling rough.
8.4 (tues) - ran with sara after she got off work. i figured i should wait until later in the day to run since i'm still very stiff in the morning. we did 4 at a decent clip.
8.5 (wed) - i was really putting off running today, and by about 4pm had every intention of just not running, but kris called me and i said yes. i cannot turn down a running partner! we did the 4.5 francis loop. i'm starting to feel a little better. my left leg feels groggy but mostly 100%, the right one is still giving me trouble--tight calf, tight hip+ITB.
8.6 (thurs) - i felt motivated and ran before work today. i just did 4 miles. again, trying to keep it conservative this week as i repeat over and over in my head that these next couple of weeks don't really matter that much. just build the mileage....slowly.
8.7 (fri) - today was a weird day. ben and i had to be downtown at 5:30a to help set up a run/walk for some kind of vitamin convention. no, it was not timed, and no, it wasn't exactly a 5k because they just wanted it to be "two loops, whatever that ends up being". okay, who are we to say differently, right?!?! so ben, matt, andrew and i spent the wee hours of the morning encouraging some recreational excersize. then it was back home for a nap! i didn't sleep well last night and desperately needed some more sleep. i was in and out, but in bed for a good 2.5 hrs. then downstairs to work all day. no run for me today. i'm tired and quite frankly don't feel like running at 8:00pm tonight! i wanted to take one day off this week anyway. today is the day.
8.8 (sat) - i did not do a good job of trying to 'rally' this morning. it was more a morning of giving in to feeling exhausted and submitting to my tight/sore muscles. i barely feel comfortable calling it a run, but i covered a three mile distance before i called it. i've got to try to pull it together for tomorrow....
8.9 (sun) - yes, this morning i rallied. there was a heat advisory in effect but i didn't let that stop me. i grabbed my fuelbelt and filled one bottle with water and the other with some cytomax, coated myself with sunscreen and grabbed a towel for the inevitable sweaty ride home. there was a good showing--a lot of people starting to gear up for fall marathons. ben and the guys took off in one direction, meanwhile i headed out with the ladies for what we deem the 'clayton loop'. i knew it to be close to 10 miles, and that's what i really wanted to do today. after the pace out the door seemed a little too quick for my recovering body, i joined ranks with sara and meaghan and we took the first couple miles a little easier, just to get warmed up. meaghan turned off early, as she only wanted to run 8. sara and i survived the loop and made it back to the visitor's center. much to my dismay, though, i realized that there was no way the loop was a full 10 miles (based on our total time up to that point). so i sucked it up and added on a few more minutes of running to be certain i covered the complete distance. overall, it was not terrible. my left hip area was getting pretty cranky over the last couple miles, but i felt i could still run through it. at least today i feel like i'm finally moving in the right direction. let's just hope i can keep it up....

sixteen weeks out
well, there i was, feeling great and on top of the world. i should have known better. after only running about 20 miles for the previous two weeks and then BAM! a 47 mile week was surely a recipe for disaster. my body revolted and this week was pretty much terrible....
7.27 (mon) - tried to run easy with the group run. only made it 3 miles before my entire left leg felt like i wanted to cut it off.
7.28 (tues) - took the day off
7.29 (wed) - got a massage. it seemed to help some. i was definitely VERY tight and sore in the lower back, butt, hip flexor, IT band, calves....you name it. i think this is going to be a bit of a process! no run today either.
7.30 (thurs) - forced myself out the door this morning. i jogged a very slow 4.5 miles. i was definitely still tight, but it wasn't painful. this may not make any sense to most, but in my mind, it is a tightness that i feel comfortable trying to run through rather than a tightness/soreness that is painful to the point i'm afraid i'm either going to hurt myself or i feel like i'm having to change my stride to accomodate the sore areas (leading to new sore areas....).
7. 31 (fri) - ran at a more normal clip, but only for 3 miles. felt mostly okay, but had the company of best man debold (in town from IL visiting ben & i) so the conversation helped keep me distracted!
8.1 (sat) - this morning was the st. louis track club's xc kick-off. originally i was going to run this, but that clearly wasn't going to happen. luckily our women's team didn't really need me, as it only takes 3 to score and julie, kris and lauren most likely would have beat me anyway!! i did about a mile warm-up with them (jumped in a little late) and then jogged around on the course while cheering for the team and taking some video. it was probably a total of 2 miles.
8.2 (sun) - the long run was at castlewood, so i really wanted to run! plus, being off the pavement was a good thing for my beat up legs. i ran 60 minutes with sara. luckliy she didn't want to run too far either. we were going at a pretty comfortable/easy pace, so it was no more than 7.5 miles i would guess. i was sore, especially my left calf, but otherwise felt o.k. it was at least a step in the right direction.
total weekly mileage: 20 miles
shoes: inspire = 42 miles
7.27 (mon) - tried to run easy with the group run. only made it 3 miles before my entire left leg felt like i wanted to cut it off.
7.28 (tues) - took the day off
