three weeks out

mon (10.26) - ran a really easy 4 miles. my legs of course felt beat up from my 22 mile run the day before but i had to get my run done in the morning because my dad was driving through with my older sister and my three nieces! it was great to see them...a little chaotic in our tiny apartment, but fun all the same. i wished they could have stayed longer.

tues (10.27) - met kris and margaret this morning for our usual run. we varied just a touch so i'm calling it 7.5 miles. i ran a bit with the blazer kids tonight too but i'm only going to tack on another 1/2 mile because the rest of it was at a pretty slow clip! 8 total for the day.

wed (10.28) - tonight's workout was 2 x 5 miles (2 x 6 miles for the higher mileage folks). after a 2 mile warm-up we got started. here's how it went:
first rep: 7.08, 7.03, 7.06, 7.06, 7.10 = 35.33
second rep: 7.09, 6.56, 7.03, 6.57, 7.02 = 35.07
i wanted to average 7:10 pace...oops. i felt good though, more like my normal self. i was nervous about this workout since last week went so poorly. i'm feeling more positive after having a much better night tonight. 15 miles for the day.

thur (10.29) - off

fri (10.30) - run in the pouring down rain. i was completely drenched. i got through 5 miles and that was enough for me. it has rained every day this week. wed we just got lucky b/c it rained in the morning and then held off during our workout. if it had been like this morning it would have been a whole different ballgame!!

sat (10.31) - a nice little 5 mile run. not great but not horrible....

sun (11.1) - long run at forest park. today i only had to run for 2hrs 10 min (16 miles). can you believe it? it felt short and easy. but i guess compared to running over 3hrs last week it should! we had a nice little group that ran together the entire way: kris, sara, jenny, natalie and her friend who was visiting, leah. now the true taper begins.

weekly total: 53 miles

shoes:
brooks trance = 79 miles
mizuno inspire = 110 miles
nike lunar glide = 32 miles

four weeks out

officially last sunday was four weeks from the marathon. it's starting to creep up and now i don't feel ready!!!

mon (10.19) - 7 miles with the group run. we ran at a pretty good clip which is probably why i felt at times like i was laboring a little. my legs are really beat up still.

tues (10.20) - met the gals in the a.m. we did a little longer loop today and were definitely rolling by the end! i'm calling it 8 for the day.

wed (10.21) - workout/disaster. the workout was 3 by 3 miles at 5 sec faster than marathon pace with a mile between sets (4 x 3 for the higher mileage folks). the first set was fine, meaning the pace was no problem, but my legs felt like absolute garbage otherwise. 7:03, 7:04, 7:04. then the next set i could really start to tell i was laboring in my stride. again, not really the pace that i felt was holding me back. it was my hamstring grabbing a little and my left hip flexor area just getting tighter and tighter and tighter. i went 7:04, 7:08, 7:11. which in all reality was still fine. i tried to stretch it out a little before attempting the next one. i had to call it at 2 miles. 7:06 and then am embarrassed to even say what the next one was. let's just say i knew it was time to stop. i was feeling pretty down but ben assures me i just need to get through this week and maybe a massage to help work out some of my stride issues. i hope he's right!! 11 miles for the day.

thurs (10.22) - took the day off. big night at the store--it's our Ladies Night that julie and i have been working on for several months now!

fri (10.23) - ran easy for two laps around francis--4.5 miles. then it was off to get a much needed massage. my stride was really off and really tight up in the hip flexor area. hopefully i will feel the effects from it soon...
i also started in on a new pair of shoes today. that should help a TON.

sat (10.24) - opted to take today off as well. still feeling a little stiff/sore from the massage and mostly just still really tired from the last two weeks of work/running and trying to find my motivation because i've lost it.

sun (10.25) - today marked the longest run of the segment. i ran for just over 3 hours mainly with kris, but we had meaghan's company for a while. we were out at castlewood so we had to loop around a lot because the trail we normally run on was flooded. the river was really high! it was good to get the time in. we probably ran about 22 miles or maybe a touch over. it was slower going while we were on the trails but the parts we ran out on the roads near the state park we were rolling along at a better clip. i followed it up with a great (big) breakfast at first watch followed by a nap. that's the real way to recover from a long run!

weekly mileage = 52 miles (in only 5 days of running)

brooks trance = 26 miles
mizuno inspire = 97 miles
brooks trance (old) = 367 miles

five weeks out and playing catch up!

i've slacked....bt (if any of you went to college with leah z. and i, you'd know our short cut for "big time" *sigh* the good old days....)

here's a super quick recap from last week.

mon (10.12) - run on my own. i think it was about 5 miles.

tues (10.13) - run in the morning with the gals, about 7.5 miles

wed (10.14) - workout. 12 x 800 at goal 10k pace, 200 jog recovery. i hit them all in the range of 3:06 - 3:10 (technically 3:10 was my goal) with most being 3:08. 9ish miles

thur (10.15) - quick turnaround for me but i had to run in the morning. very little sleep and sore legs from the night before. 7 miles with kris. then it was off to the kc marathon expo where andrew and i were hoping to sell a bunch of out-of-season stuff to help clear out the two big river stores. first day...success!

fri (10.16) - felt TERRIBLE. i guess it wasn't a big surprise here. driving to kc (towing a trailer, making cruise control out of the question) then unpacking in a mad flurry, then standing for another 5 or so hours working the booth was a really really LONG day. i forced myself out the door, but just ran 2 miles (yes, only two) and came back and did a lot of streching. the expo ran 10a - 9p and then we had to pack everything up. yes, after 9p. thank goodness for my dad coming over in the afternoon to help us out and then staying until the bitter end to help us pack up the uhaul. the expo = success, my running = not going so well.....

sat (10.17) - drive back from kc, unload everything, return the trailer, etc, etc, etc. i was finally done around 6p. there was no way i was going to run.

sun (10.18) - was i crazy for still running the go! st. louis 10k? probably. but i did anyway. i felt terrible, of course. but i managed to fight it out and run 40:39 which is about 6:33 per mile pace. a little sad when you realize i ran a 15k at 6:37's. yikes. i just have to try to pull myself back together and get back on the right track for the marathon. 11 for the day with a long warm up and cool down.

weekly mileage: 41 miles (yikes....)

mizuno inspire = 97 miles
brooks trance = 367 miles

six weeks out

mon (10.5) - ben was kind enough to switch shifts with me so i could do the group run tonight. my legs were still feeling pretty beat up from the long run/workout sunday. i ran the 7 mile loop with kris and jenny but opted not to do drills. i didn't want to add insult to injury, so to speak. it was nice to have the company...

tues (10.6) - i met margaret this morning (no kris--she had an early morning work committment). i knew there was a chance for rain, so i threw on some shorts, a tank and my running jacket (to act as my long sleeve top i would have worn). we met up and started to head towards tower grove park. then the thunder and lightning started. then it got worse. then it started to just down pour! at this point we were in the park. you know, lots of trees...plenty of targets for incoming lightning! we bolted from the park and made our way back through the neighborhoods and then safely home. i would've liked to run for an hour, but i'm content with the 45 min i got in. i'm calling it 5.5 for the day.

wed (10.7) - workout day. the plan was 4 by 2 miles at 10 sec faster than marathon pace with approx 1/2 mile jog in between each set. after a one mile+ warm-up we were off. i had the company of kristen on the first one, but then she dropped back to run her actual marathon pace (which is 7:20s). the rest of the usual gang was out. i would say that everyone there doing the workout had a good one. i for one felt fantastic. it was a strange feeling...running hard, yet in control, that almost makes it feel easy. i almost think it is harder to slow it down a bit to my actual marathon pace (more like 7:10-7:15, the latter being the main goal).
here were my split breakdowns:
rep #1: 7:00/6:57 for 13:57
rep #2: 6:56/6:59 for 13:55
rep #3: 7:02/6:56 for 13:58
rep #4: 6:59/6:55 for 13:54
with warm-up/cool-down and recovery jogs, i'm calling it 12 for the day.
very pleased with this one...

thur (10.8) - feeling fairly unmotivated to get out the door this morning. a lot of it has to do with the pouring down rain!! i finally got going but never really felt into the run. my legs are definitely a little beat up from the workout, plus, it was kind of a quick turn around from running late on wed and then early thurs. got in 5.5 for the day.

fri (10.9) - still raining this morning. i am sick of this weather!!! it's like i'm back in portland again...not that i wouldn't actually really love that...but i don't miss all the rain. yuck. luckily i had some motivation as i was meeting up with margaret again this morning. at least there was no thunder and lightning! we met in the middle of our houses and then headed back to tower grove park. we did a full lap around the park--keeping to the roads rather than the running path, since it was mostly under water! i started to feel better after the first couple miles. we got rolling pretty good at the end and ran for a total of 60 min. i'm going to call it 7.5 though it was honestly maybe a little farther than that.

sat (10.10) - got in a quick 4.5 miles. didn't feel great but i got it in. then off to a very busy day at work....

sun (10.11) - long run today was going to be 15 miles, then 3 at fast (meaning get after it!) then another 2 to make it 20 total. i met the usual group at the visitor's center but ended up mostly running with kris. we headed downtown to the arch and back. when we entered the park we headed the opposite way we had left to set ourselves up to run the 3 miles fast. at more like 14.5 we started our fast segment. i was surprised to run 6:46, 6:35, 6:24. then we did rounded out the run with another 2.5 miles to make it a full 20. both the regular running and the fast part i felt like i was in slow motion. i guess part of it is just the fact that i'm hitting my highest mileage week since some point in college.
i didn't get to recover really at all from the run as all i had time for when i got home was a quick bowl of cereal and an even faster shower to get out to the west county store in time to open up. then of course it was busy and i was dehydrated and on my feet for over 5 hours. not a good situation when i got home. i'm going to regret it monday i'm almost certain...but what can you do? this is the way of it when you're trying to fit running into your life.
