long run this morning with the last five miles at goal marathon pace. i was planning on doing 20 miles, which marks my longest run ever, plus the five mile fast finish is the longest fast finish i've ever tried to do. two reasons i wasn't super confident about the run this morning.
we went out to castlewood early and julie, julie, kris and i got in about 6 miles before swinging back to pick up the rest of the group--which turned out to only be jess! then we headed back out. kris hasn't been feeling well and jess is just starting back into a training program, so they turned around early. the julies were running faster than i thought i was capable of, so i hung back a little. they turned early to do their fast finish on the roads near the park. i opted to just keep on the trail, so i turned around at 7 miles out. at the 2 hour mark, i tried to start picking it up. it felt pretty good in the beginning. there are no real mile markers out there, so you really have to rely on pace. luckily i caught up to mark (one of our masters runners) and he ended up running the rest of the way in with me. i was thankful to have him there because it helped me keep my pace up. i didn't really start to feel the hurt until the last mile. when i got back, i realized why. i had run my last 5 miles in 34:45. much faster than my goal marathon pace! i was glad i was able to do that, but i was also getting nervous during the last mile because i was thinking that there was no way i could maintain this pace for 26 miles! overall, i was pleased with my run. the soreness and exhaustion have already settled in. and even after a 2 hour nap (yes, my favorite part), i feel like i could use more. i guess that's the nature of the long run...
